Staying Fit and Healthy this Holiday Season!!

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Health and lifestyle wellness coach A.J. Johnson has given Essence Magazine some fabulous tips for staying fit and healthy this holiday season. Read the Essence Magazine article below.

You know the routine: First, you chomp down on your mom’s signature apple pie; then sip a few cocktails at the holiday office party. And don't forget, the hours spent cooking when you should be pumping iron at the gym. “It’s definitely a difficult time of year. You’re trying to squeeze into cute dresses, but there’s cookies and egg nog everywhere,” says wellness guru A.J. Johnson, whose celebrity clients include BeyoncĂ©, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, Gabrielle Union, Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker. “Still, it’s not a time to make excuses. You should plan instead of panic.” Here, Johnson shares her best secrets for having a happy holiday without it all going to your waist.

#1 Do Some Prep Work
“Commit to making a plan. The better the plan, the healthier the holiday,” says Johnson who has a ‘no excuses’ philosophy when it comes to wellness. Need to do holiday shopping during your normal workout time? Figure out when you’ll make it up or carry your goods instead of pushing them around in a cart so shopping becomes a workout. If you know that you’re going to indulge a bit at an office potluck, cut a few calories from other meals to make up for it.

#2 Fix Yourself A Plate—At Home
“If you’re going to a holiday dinner someplace else, eat a little something before you go so you’re not starving and likely to overeat when you get there,” advises Johnson. This is also a great way to make sure you’re eating healthy because you can pick the ingredients of your own dishes at home, even when we’re talking about desserts.. “When you’re making holiday cakes and pies, I’d rather people use honey, molasses, brown sugar, or even fresh fruit juice” suggests Johnson. “Natural sugar will burn off faster than chemically processed sugars.”

#3 Go Ahead, Have a Taste!
“A taste isn’t bad. You can have a taste of mac-and-cheese, but it shouldn’t become a side. It should be a tasty treat,” explains Johnson. So if the sweet potatoes or mac-and-cheese are making your mouth water, give in. But after your spoonful of banana pudding or forkful of pumpkin pie, put that utensil down and catch up with the cousin you haven’t seen in a year, or sit down and play a game with your nephew. By paying attention to portions, you’ll get to have your cake and eat it too without suffering the consequences.

#4 Avoid Eater’s Remorse
“Instead of saying, ‘I shouldn’t have eaten that,’ say ‘I want it, I’m going to eat it, and I’ll have work to do later for it,’” advises Johnson. “If I say I can’t pass up that red velvet cake, I know that means I have to do an extra 30 minutes on the treadmill or do an extra lap at the mall." So indulge, but have a plan of attack when it comes to blasting those extra calories that you’ve consumed.

#5 Shift The Focus Away From Food
“We make the excuse that Thanksgiving is about the dinner,” says Johnson, “but Thanksgiving can be about organizing the family touch-football game, group twister or everyone taking a walk together.” Try introducing new traditions to your holiday get-togethers that get your family moving—and burning calories. That way you all benefit in the end.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!! Enjoy the holidays!!!

If you're like most Americans, you will be doing a lot of your holiday shopping this [black]Friday. Most people will wake up super early to hit the stores. Last year, I hit Target, Macy's, Bloomingdales and Bed Bath & Beyond for all their megasales. Too bad!! I was too late. This year, I"m shopping...........you guessed it - ONLINE!! I'm sure I'm not alone. For myself and all those other super smart shoppers out there, here are few sassy online shopping tips from CNNMoney.com. Happy Clicking!!

Top Tips: Online shopping safety - By Gerri Willis, CNN

The online shopping season is expected to bring in almost $39 billion in sales this year. And online shopping is a great way to keep your spending in line. But when you let your fingers do the walking, you'll want to take some precautions.

1. Look for a lock

You are particularly vulnerable to identity thieves when you're sending out your credit card information. To make sure your Web site is safe, look for a picture of a closed lock in the browser window. If you see a broken lock or key that means security isn't operating at that time according to the American Bar Association.

When the Web page asks for your credit card information, the web address should begin with "https" instead of "http." Other sites will have a pop up box that indicates you are entering a secure area.

2. Know your privacy

Ever wonder why you get spam from marketers you never did business with? It's because sellers on the web are allowed to collect your name, address, information on what Web site pages you visit, which products you buy, and where you ship them.

The seller can also share the information with other companies or sell it to them. Result: more spam. It's a good idea to check the seller's privacy policy. This will tell you what info the seller is collecting, how it will be used - and most importantly, how you can opt out of having this info distributed. Check for the privacy policy under "legal terms" or "terms and conditions."

3. Use the card

You'll be better off using a credit card rather than a debit card if you're making purchases online. A lot of cards have a "zero liability limit" meaning that you won't be held responsible if there's a fraudulent charge to your card. Federal law also limits the amount you would owe to $50.

Some cards even let you create an online ID for one-time purchases. Bank of America's ShopSafe card lets you create a temporary number when you make an online purchase. This number links to your real credit card - and keeps your real card safe. Discover card also lets you shop online with secure online account numbers. Call your credit card issuer and find out if it offers a protection like that.

4. Be wary of e-mails

You may receive an e-mail that looks like its from the company. It may ask you for your personal information in order to "verify" accounts or "clear up" errors that have occurred.

Remember, legitimate businesses do not ask for social security numbers or bank account numbers. You shouldn't respond to these e-mails and don't click on the links they contain.

If you want to check with the company, type the address of the Web site into your own computer or call the company about any questions. You should also consider changing your password every 3 to 4 months to make sure it hasn't fallen into the wrong hands.

Black Friday shopping guide - Marshall Loeb, MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Waking up early, pounding a cup of coffee and sprinting to the nearest mall has become a post-Thanksgiving tradition for many Americans bargain hunters. Not only does so-called Black Friday usher in the holiday shopping season, it also brings with it some of the best sales of the year.

But to get the most for your money, you would do well to heed the advice of The Motley Fool's "Pro-shopper" Dayana Yochim before hitting the stores:
Shop the night before. If you're looking for the cheapest prices on the "hottest" items, you may want to start your shopping online the night before. Why? A number of retail outlets post their Black Friday sales prices online on Thursday night, Yochim says. Snagging "must-have" items online in advance of the sales rush means you'll get the best price without having to worry about the store running out of the product you're after.

Search for coupon codes. If you're shopping online, be sure to take advantage of coupon codes. "If you're not, you're leaving money on the table," says Yochim. New to the world of coupon codes? Don't worry, it's easy. Just plug the name of the product you're looking for into your search engine along with the words "coupon code." If there is a coupon available, a link should appear, providing you with a discount code to plug in when you order online. You can also find deals on Web sites, such as Currentcodes.com, Couponcabin.com and Dealcoupon.com.

Research store return policies. A number of retailers are changing their return policies just for the holiday season, says Yochim, which means if you're not careful you could get stuck with some hefty fees for returns and exchanges. Stores' return policies are generally posted on their Web sites. You can also ask a clerk to help decode the fine print on the back of your receipt. But beware: many holiday employees are temporary and may not be clear on store policy.

Order must-have items early. If snagging the best deal is less important than making sure that you get your hands on this season's hottest toys, it's important to get a head-start on your shopping. Last year, retailers vastly overestimated the demand for a number of products and were forced to sell merchandise at bargain basement prices. To ensure this doesn't happen again, many stores are only stocking the bare minimum this holiday season, so supplies could run low, Yochim warns.

Beware of "sales." Just because something is on "sale," doesn't mean it's a good deal. So before you buy, do some retail recon. Go online and compare prices. "The more Web sites you visit to get an apples-to-apples comparison, the easier it will be to recognize a real deal," Yochim says. When you're ready to buy make sure you know exactly what's included in the purchase price or you may find yourself shelling out more for expensive "add-ons." Hint: If you're shopping in stores, bring hard-to-beat online offers to your local retailer and see if it will match the price.

Watch out for "warranties." Many salespeople make commissions off warranties, so if you're in the market for consumer electronics or appliances be prepared to get the hard sell. Yochim advises steering clear of warranties unless you're buying a product that hasn't been on the market long enough to have established reliability ratings. If you do opt for a warranty, you shouldn't be paying more than 20% of the product's purchase price, according to Consumer Reports.

Sweat the big stuff. If you don't have time to methodically search out the best deals for everything on your list, Yochim recommends concentrating your energy on big-ticket items, such as televisions and computers, where you can net the most significant savings.

How to Boss Yourself Efficiently

Structure your day. The problem a lot of homebased business owners have is that they no longer have a boss standing over them making sure they get their work done, or a tangible start and end of each workday. It's easy to let time slip by as you head to the refrigerator, catch a few minutes of TV, or dive into a project first thing in the morning, neglecting the other tasks you need to perform to keep your business running smoothly.

Create a structure that mimics what you had in the workplace. Structure your day so you have a start and finish time, with certain hours set aside for specific activities. A general rule is to spend the first hour of the day prospecting for new clients. Send your emails, write your letters and make your phone calls first thing so you don't forget to do it later.

Use Outlook or some sort of contact management software to serve as a visual reminder of what you need to accomplish that day. Live and die by your to-do-list. Try to have everything crossed off by the end of the day. Even my own children know that if they want me to do something for them during working hours, they have to put it on my to-do-list or it will never get done.

Stay connected. Carry an organizer wherever you go. If you're still using a day planner or similar dinosaur, consider upgrading to a Blackberry or other high-tech gadget. You don't need to go crazy and spend a lot of money, but invest wisely in something that will hold everything you need and allow you to instantly access it on the go. Another good idea is to not keep all of your information in one location, such as the hard drive of your home computer. Keep your data hosted on a virtual exchange server so you can access it anywhere that has an Internet connection. A big misconception about homebased business owners is that they stay at home all day, everyday. And as you know, that's just not always true.

Organize your family time. Once your professional life is organized, you may need to consider organizing your personal life. Maybe you noticed right away, or maybe it's just becoming apparent, that you tend to work around the schedule of your family members. This is especially true if you have children. A lot of people, especially young moms, decide that they're going to quit their jobs in corporate America and work from home in order to care for their children and save on daycare expenses. But in reality, if you're serious about running a homebased business and earning a decent income, you're going to have to make arrangements for childcare in or outside the home. Otherwise it becomes too distracting. Consider hiring a babysitter so you're guaranteed five to six solid hours to get your work done.

Motivate yourself. Sit down and set some goals for yourself. You no longer have quarterly reviews or progress reports, so it's important to keep track of whether or not you're making progress in your business. It's one thing to set small goals like completing your to-do-list--you also have to set goals to motivate yourself to succeed. Hopefully by now you're making as much, if not more, money at your homebased business than you were at your former job. If you aren't, begin by setting a goal to bring in the same amount of income you were, and slowly raise the bar to increase your income by a couple of thousand a month. Once you've met a goal, make time to reward yourself by doing something fun, which brings us to the next tip.

Take time out for good behavior. It's not uncommon to find yourself working 60- to 70-hour weeks. But the good thing is, if you want to sneak out and see a movie at two in the afternoon, nobody's going to tell you not to do it. You have that freedom and flexibility as a home business owner. It can be tempting to work all the time when you start seeing how successful your business has become, but know when to relax. You've already established a smooth-running business. Take a break every now and then so you don't get burned out.

Be a Jack-of-all-trades. There are a lot of roles you play as a homebased business owner: You're the CEO, president, secretary, office manager and tech support. Learn the basic skills of running an office, including how to troubleshoot some rudimentary technical problems. You don't need to become an expert, but make sure you have a basic understanding of tech support issues, bookkeeping, etc. Otherwise it will become too expensive to have to pay someone to do everything for you.

Network. Network with other homebased business owners in either a formal or informal setting. This is a good way to find service providers, leads and potential clients. Surrounding yourself with people who also work from home will give you the support you need, and refer you to people who can help you grow your business.

Consider moving out of your home. For a lot of people, working from home is a launching pad. In the beginning, many business owners work from home in order to keep overhead low. If you have more than one person with different roles working from your home office, you should ideally be working in separate rooms. It can be difficult having two people work side by side, even if those two people are spouses and love each other very much. It's distracting for anyone to have someone three feet away from you talking on the phone. Be prepared for expansion. At the point when your business becomes so successful that you cannot efficiently work close together, start considering moving your office outside the home.

Random Tidbits - Sexism and Perjury

Friday, November 16, 2007

John McCain - At a recent rally, the Republican presidential hopeful was asked by a supporter, "How do we beat the bitch?" in reference to Hillary Clinton. McCain laughed and then responded that that was an excellent question. Classy guy huh? (Side note--It's sad that the question came from a woman and that because Hillary is strong and opinionated automatically she's a bitch. What a world).

Barry Bonds - The record-breaking baseball player was indicted yesterday on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Bonds is accused of lying to a grand jury by saying that he did not knowingly take steroids. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison. Not a good look for black sports figures these days--first Michael Vick.....

Matt Damon is the Sexiest Man ALIVE? I didn't get the memo.

People magazine has just listed the 100 Sexiest Men alive. Matt Damon took top honors. Now, I liked the Bourne Ultimatum as much as anyone else, and he has a certain cute quality--but sexiest man drawing breath anywhere in the universe? Not so much.

Sadly, aside from Denzel, I didn't see any of the other smokin' hot men of color listed in CITC's Top 12 a week or so ago, on People's list. Yet somehow Shemar Moore, Donald Faison and Kanye West made the list? Booo. I mean, after Shemar's nude gay beach frolic, his sex appeal (at least for me) has dropped significantly.

For my money, I'm giving top honors to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (pictured below). Now that's a man right there!

Who do you think is really the sexiest man alive?

Building a Fabulous Website

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Excerpted from Entrepreneurpress.com*

What makes a good website? Before getting enmeshed in design details, get the big picture by writing a site outline. A well-thought-out site outline includes: content, structure, design, navigation and credibility.

An outline helps you get the most out of your e-commerce budget. You'll know whether you or someone in your company can do each piece or if you need outside help. That way, when you hire someone, it will be for only the parts of the job that you'll need to have outsourced. Lillian Vernon, who founded the well-known catalog company Lillian Vernon Corp. in 1951, designed her original website for a fraction of what her competitors spent. How? "It's a total misconception that you have to throw [big] dollars at an e-commerce solution," she says. "You have to be a very careful shopper among vendors."

A detailed outline to prospective web designers makes the process more efficient.

Content: The key to a successful site is content. Give site visitors a lot of interesting information, incentives to visit and buy, and ways to contact you. Once your site is up and running, continually update and add fresh content to keep people coming back for more.

Structure: Next, structure your site. Decide how many pages to have and how they'll be linked to each other. Choose graphics and icons that enhance the content. Pictures of adorable children of different ages, for example, might work well if you're selling children's clothes, with pictures of toys and books that site visitors can click on to jump to other pages within your site where they can buy these items. At this point, organize the content into a script.

Your script is the numbered pages that outline the site's content and how pages flow from one to the next. Page 1 is your home page, the very first page that site visitors will see when they type in your website address, or URL. Arrange all the icons depicting major content areas in the order you want them. Pages 2 through whatever correspond to each icon on your home page. Following our example of selling children's clothes, perhaps you'd start with the icon labeled "birth through one year" as page 2. Pages 3 through 12 might be all products and services pertaining to that age range. Page 13, then, would start with the icon from your home page labeled "one to three years."

Writing a script ensures your website is chock-full of great content that is well organized. Write well, give site visitors something worthwhile for their time spent with you, and include a lot of valuable information and regular opportunities to get more content. Whether you offer a free newsletter, a calendar of events, columns from experts or book reviews, content and its structure becomes the backbone of your website.

Design: With the content and structure in place, site design comes next. Whether you're using an outside designer or doing it yourself, concentrate on simplicity, readability and consistency. Before you start using HTML tags right and left, remember what you want to accomplish.

For example, if you have a pet products website, you recognize that many pet owners have both dogs and cats. You want them to be able to shop and order in the way that's most comfortable for them. Perhaps they want to get their pet food order out of the way first, then shop for toys and fashion accessories. Maybe they prefer to shop for their cats, then focus on shopping for their doggie goodies.

Cue them with graphics, colors and fonts that make sense to you. Should all cat-related text and icons contain blue, while dog items are red? Should all food text and graphics be green, toys red and accessories yellow? These subtle cues make all the difference in how visitors respond to your website. Keep surfing the internet to research what combinations of fonts, colors and graphics appeal to you, and incorporate pleasant and effective design elements into your site.

Navigation: Make it easy and enjoyable for visitors to browse the site. Use no more than two or three links to major areas, never leave visitors at a dead end, and don't make them back up three or four links to get from one content area to another. For example, if you have a website for convention planners, make it easy for visitors to link to city sites where they can find information about theaters, river cruises, museums and the like so convention attendees can check out recreational activities on their own.

Credibility: This is an issue that shouldn't be lost in the bells and whistles of establishing a website. Your site should reach out to every visitor, telling her why she should buy your product or your service. It should look very professional and give potential customers the same feeling of confidence that a phone call or face-to-face visit with you would. Remind the visitors that you don't exist only in cyberspace. Your company's full contact information--contact name, company name, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone, fax and e-mail address--should appear on your home page.

Brick & Mortar Commerce v. E-Commerce

As with any business move or expansion, considering an online presence can raise a sometimes dizzying list of questions for an entrepreneur. Exactly what must be put in place to make it happen? How does an online presence change the market for the business? What are competitors doing? How will people shop? What kind of security is required? How will customers pay online? We put together this guide, a primer of sorts, to help answer those questions.

Small businesses that have little or no e-commerce capabilities on their websites will learn about taking the next step in converting their marketing sites into selling locations that extend their customer bases, images and sales in entirely new ways. Those entrepreneurs not yet online will discover how the Internet is likely to transform their businesses and introduce them to markets far beyond those which are currently in reach.

Why Go Online?

The most amazing aspect of e-commerce is its ability to impact sales and marketing efforts immediately. By going online, suddenly a neighborhood bakery or a homebased consulting service expands its reach to a national, or even international base of potential customers. Web-based sales know no international boundaries.

LL Cool J (on Jigga running Def Jam) - "I just don't feel like he had the necessary experience to do that job. I don't know any other record company that he worked for where he learned how to run this business. This is a label that started in 1984 and you just can't give somebody a job because you want to attract talent and look sexy... because there are artists that suffer. I'm not anti-Jay-Z, I'm [just] pro-LL."

Condolences to Kanye

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Our condolences go out to Kanye on the death of his biggest supporter - His Mom.

Donda West, the mother and onetime manager of rapper Kanye West, died Saturday in Los Angeles. BBC News quotes her publicist as saying she passed away "as the result of complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure," but gave no more details. West's spokesman said the family "asks for privacy during this time of grief." West, 58, a retired professor and former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department, was a tireless supporter of her son as he both earned success and stirred up controversy. "Kanye likes to think as a hobby and speak his own mind. He was always like that," Donda West told InStyle earlier this year. "He came out of the womb looking like he had that attitude."As CEO of West Brands LLC and co-founder of the Kanye West Foundation, she teamed with her son to develop a nonprofit that aimed to combat the dropout problem in high schools in 2005. In May, she released the book Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar.

Supportive Mother

Donda West raised her son as a single mother in the Chicago neighborhood of South Shore after divorcing his father Ray, a former Black Panther, when Kanye was 3. The rapper paid tribute to her efforts in his song "Hey Mama," singing: "See you're unbreakable, unmistakable/ Highly capable, lady that's makin loot/ A livin' legend too, just look at what heaven do/ Send us an angel, and I thank you (Hey Mama)." The ode became the ring tone she played on her cell phone. "She always gave me support," Kanye West said. "A lot of parents don't train their kids to think."In June, Donda joined Kanye to celebrate his 30th birthday at the flagship Louis Vuitton store in Manhattan, where she danced onstage to "She Wants to Move" as her son chanted "Go Mom! Go Mom!" The next celebration she was looking forward to was his marriage. Of Kanye's fiancé Alexis Phifer, she told PEOPLE: "The best thing that I love about her is that she loves my son. You can't beat that."

Chicas On Vacay!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Drinks, Hotties, Shopping, OH MY! Several of the Chicas are headed on a mini-vacay so the posts are going to be a little sparse for a few days. Sassy has already been in Italy for a week (damn her) and she invited us to join her for the second leg of her European adventure in Barcelona. All I need is an invite and my bags are ready to go. HAAA! So, we're packing up and taking this show on the road for a long weekend. And since the party scene in Espana is ridic, I know we'll have plenty to blog about on our return. Those Spanish hombres ain't ready!

Hollywood Writers Strike And We'll Have To Watch (wait for it.....) RERUNS!

Monday, November 5, 2007

Woe is me. The Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and the Writer's Guild of America's bargaining talks have failed and now writers of our favorite tv shows and movies are walking the picket line. I realize there are serious implications for the entire entertainment industry, their families, and I completely understand that these writers simply want to be compensated when shows they have written are downloaded on Ipods or sold as DVDS. Who wouldn't want to make money off of their work? However, the thought of reruns of my favorite shows in any other period than the summertime hurts my heart! I mean, mid-season, no Ugly Betty, The Office, 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, The Game? What's a girl to do? Sure I can read a book, go outside, and/or get a life, but somehow I feel I'm going to be sitting somewhere watching I Love New York 2 marathons.....

JOKER OF THE WEEK Nominations

Congrats to Halle Berry for winning last week's Joker of the Week crown. On to this week's nominees. Drumroll please....

T-Pain - For being arrested for non-moving traffic violations and driving without a license. Isn't that some random Britney Spears nonsense? Come on Nappy Boy.

Da Brat - For being arrested for allegedly busting a bottle of rum upside some waitress's head at Jermaine Dupri's nightclub Studio 72 in Atlanta, Georgia. Is anyone else tired of female rappers spending more time in jail than in the studio (i.e. Lil' Kim, Remy Ma, Foxy Brown)?

Bounty Hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman - For being caught on tape in a racist tirade about his son dating a black woman, which included such gems as, "I don't care if she's a Mexican, a whore or whatever. It's not because she's black, it's because we use the word ni**er sometimes here. I'm not gonna take a chance ever in life of losing everything I've worked for for 30 years because some f***** ni**er heard us say ni**er and turned us in to the Enquirer magazine. Our career is over! I'm not taking that chance at all! Never in life! Never! Never! If Lyssa [Dog's daughter] was dating a ni**er, we would all say 'f*ck you!' And you know that. If Lyssa brought a black guy home ya da da... it's not that they're black, it's none of that. It's that we use the word ni**er. We don't mean you f*cking scum ni**er without a soul. We don't mean that sh*t. But America would think we mean that. And we're not taking a chance on losing everything we got over a racial slur because our son goes with a girl like that. I can't do that Tucker." (I hate to reprint this hatred, but I really want him to be the Joker of the Week).

5. Common
6. Boris Kodjoe
7. Tyrese
8. Derek Luke
9. David Beckham
10. Reggie Bush
11. Paul Walker
12. Lamman Rucker

Honorable mention goes to Tyler Perry and Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in the world who's about to build a $1 BILLION dollar home (i.e. manion, i.e. compound). You know they can buy you things that will keep you warm for years to come!!!!!!

That's What S/He Said!

Channing Crowder (NFL Linebacker admitting that he didn't know where London was, or that Londoners spoke English) - "I couldn't find London on a map if they didn't have the names of the countries. I swear to God. I don't know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that. I know (Washington Redskins linebacker) London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That's the closest thing I know to London. He's black, so I'm sure he's not from London. I'm sure that's a coincidental name."

Angie Stone (on her ex and child's father D'Angelo) - "Ain’t nothin’ happen with us. I never really say nothin’ negative about him, but he’s on my s*it list right now.”

George Bush (on the Iraq war)- "I fully understand those who say you can't win this thing militarily. That's exactly what the United States military says, that you can't win this military."

Karrine Steffans
(formerly known as Supahead on her relationship with Bill Maher) - "Bill wants someone he can put down in an argument, tell you how ghetto you are, how big your butt is, and that you're an idiot. That's why you never see him with a white girl or an intellectual. I might as well have been a Muslim woman with my head wrapped, walking 10 paces behind my man. [But] I couldn't be 'Bill Maher's girlfriend' any more - not when I'm Karrine Steffans . . . best-selling author."

Barack Obama (at a recent MTV forum) - "Part of my job as president I think is to deliver a message that everybody is part of the American family," he said. "Not just some people. And obviously as somebody who is African-American — my mother is from Kansas, my father was from Kenya, I grew up in Indonesia, I have a sister who looks Spanish, I've got a brother in law who is Chinese-Canadian — I'm very sensitive to making sure that everybody feels a part of America. And that's one of the things I think I can bring to this presidency. The day I'm inaugurated the country will look at itself differently and I think be more tolerant."

David Letterman (in honor of Halloween) - ''Today, the Dalai Lama visited the White House. He rang the doorbell and Bush answered and he said, 'Oh, let me get some candy.'''

Barack, Ellen, Dancing, Beyonce - I'm Scared And It's Not Halloween Yet!

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama decided to showcase his dance moves on the Ellen Degeneres Show yesterday. I'm torn and somewhat frightened. On the one hand, it shows a light-hearted, somewhat smooth side to Senator Obama. On the other hand, I don't like any man dancing to "Crazy in Love" by Beyonce for fear that a butt bounce is imminent.... In any event, I think he can dance better than he was letting on--trying not to groove too hard since he is running for the highest political office in the land. But click on the picture above and you decide. Thumbs up or thumbs down?

FASHION FIGHTS POVERTY - 2007

Last Friday October 26, I attended a fashion show put on by Fashion Fights Poverty at the Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C. FFP, in its third year, is "one of the largest fashion fundraisers in Washington, DC," and it showcases national and international designers who design and manufacture clothing by ethical means and practices. Anyway, I had never heard of Fashion Fights Poverty, but one of my good friends Lily, featured in one of the above pics, modeled in the show, so I decided to grab a ticket and hit the event. TALK ABOUT FABULOUS. The venue was exquisite, the media was snapping pics, the red carpet was out, the champagne and vodka (Belvedere Vodka was a sponser) were FLOWIN', and the DJ was pumpin' Jay-Z. Now that's a friday night.

The pre-show started around 6 pm and the pouring rain did not keep attendees away. I had gone solo, and while I was sipping a cosmo, lounging in a chair and enjoying the ambiance, a random woman named Michelle came up to me, asked me if I was by myself too? I said yes and she said "Cool. We can hang out together." HAAA! And we did. For a couple of hours, we mingled in the Edward Marc chocolate suite (I had to sample a little Grand Marnier in a milk chocolate shot glass), "looked" at the silent auction items, and window shopped at some of the various trendy vendors' tables. For those who wanted to really spend some money, they could also pay to mingle in the VIP Suite. One complaint - I actually did not want to mingle in the VIP suite. I was happy to be a commoner with a $100 Pret-A-Porter ticket. But then I got a lot of different stories from the staff members about whether or not the $100 included a seat. First yes. Then maybe. Then no. WHAAAAAA? $100 and I'm standing? Hell to the naw! Not for 2 hours. I wanted to know who was in charge, and the staff didn't even know that! Don't get me wrong, every person I spoke with was sweet as apple pie, but sadly misinformed. So I ended up springing for the additional $80 to upgrade to the VIP Haute Couture ticket. Needless to say, TravelDiva was not pleased.

BUT, the party must go on. Because now that I had spent $180, I was going to have a D*MN good time--so Michelle and I headed to the VIP suite to relax for a little bit before the show. After about 30 minutes or so, it was time to be seated and get ready for the show. Much to my chagrin, it turned out I didn't need to buy the VIP ticket to get a seat or the VIP swag bag. Only the first 3 rows were reserved, the rest was on a first come first served basis. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I was so bitter, I had to take a moment and pray because otherwise I would have been sitting through the whole show pissed because I'd wasted $80. It took me a minute, but I pulled myself together. It helped ease my pain that I was near the front, and I swear I saw the Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell on the first row (Now this is totally unconfirmed. I just noticed a really handsome straight guy on the front row. Then on Sunday I was watching the Skins/Patriots game for wager reasons and I saw their quarterback and I thought, didn't I see his fine behind at the fashion show? Given his team's 52 to 7 loss though, maybe he should have been home praying instead of at the fashion show). But I digress.

The show itself--Off da hook! Straight out of ANTM land! It was hosted by Will Thomas (Fox news anchor) and fashion guru Jaci Reid (rockin' a free-flowing Roberto Cavalli gown). There were a number of designers featured including Basia Frossard, Belabumbum, ChaChaboy, Eliptica, Elizabeth Muir, Kimberly Kouture, and Liliana Castellanos. The fashions showcased were fierce from the sexy lingerie and cute maternity wear of Belabumbum to ChaChaboy's swimwear for the heteroquestionable male to the sassy designs of Elizabeth Muir. My favorite designs of the night, however, came from Liliana Castellanos. AAAAAGH! Her colors were simple, some variation of red, black, white and/or gray. But each outfit was chic, creative and most importantly WEARABLE! I mean, her designs were the type to make you want to buy them, wear them and then strut down the street like you're on a catwalk! Bravo Liliana!

After the show, the after party was held at Lotus Lounge. The party was packed, the DJ was hit or miss, but I hung out as long as I could to try to get my VIP value. LOL. All in all, it was a fantastic event and I will definitely be in attendance next year!

Boohoo For The Millionaire

Friday, October 26, 2007

Some time ago, my friends and I were discussing Britney Spears' troubles--not the "divorce/drugs/head-shaving/custody loss/VMA stiff dancing" troubles--but back when things were much simpler and Brit Brit had "married to K-Fed and driving little Sean Preston around without a car seat" kind of troubles. Grown Woman, a new mom herself, sympathized with Brit because of how difficult it must be for Brit to have all of her new mother struggles documented by the media. Poor poor Britney. Poor Britney? She's rich! Earlier this year, Brit was estimated as being worth $100 million and according to Forbes magazine, she is believed to be the 12th richest woman in entertainment. Boohoo for the millionaire! No, money doesn't solve all of your problems--that is obvious. But it sure does help. Most of us have to get up every day and go to work to pay the mortgage and a gazillion other bills. But if you're a multi-millionaire, you would never have to be concerned about financial security and that's one big worry NOT to have. So Boo friggin' hoo for Britney. She needs to get some intensive counseling, spend some quality time with her family, get her priorities straight, and take her behind to church.

But Brit Brit isn't the only one who's made me think, "Boohoo." Here are some others...

Kanye West - He threw a temper tantrum after he was forced to perform in (gasp) a suite at the 2007 VMAs and failed to win any awards. He ranted and raved about not performing on the "big" stage and how he made the song "Stronger" to be played in stadiums. (Really? A song that includes the line "I would do anything for a blond d*ke" was made for stadiums? Who knew?). He went on and on about how he should have opened the VMAs instead of Britney because she hasn't had a hit record in 5 million years. (rude, but funny). Ye has VOWED to never appear on MTV again. Cry me a friggin' river. West was ranked number 8 on Forbes Hip Hop Cash Kings List and earned an estimated $17 million in 2006 alone. So put the booze down Ye, go shopping for a pink sweater in Italy and relax with your millions.

50 Cent - After he was trounced domestically in his album release battle with the aforementioned Ye, 50 had more excuses than enough. His record company didn't promote him right, Def Jam bought copies of Kanye's cds to make it sell better, people are hating on him and have higher expectations for him because he's so fantastic..... He also threatened to release an album every time Def Jam had a major record release. (maybe called "Half a Dollar's Revenge"). Wah Wah Wah. Man up rich boy and take your loss with a little backbone. 50 earned an estimated $32 million in 2006 and is worth many millions more. So Curtis, please stop your whining, go sit in a corner and drink some vitamin water.

Kim Porter (Diddy's Ex and likely Future) - Porter broke up with P. Diddy after discovering that he had another little infant in Atlanta, Georgia. She up and moved everything out of the couple's NY home and bounced! Initially, you think, oh that's so sad, they just had twins, were on the cover of Essence magazine, that's awful. Boohoo. Porter's got 3 little Diddies, two of whom are infants--she's STRAIGHT. Porter is gonna be alright with some healing time, some get myself together time, and a portion of Diddy's $500 million fortune.

So readers, the next time you see some celebrity trouble or some rich person whining--put things in perspective, say "Boohoo for the millionaire'" and then take your behind back to work.

Love and Lions for Luke

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Lions for Lambs comes out Nov 9th. Maybe you'll see it for Robert Redford or Meryl Streep - both fine actors or to see whether Tom Cruise's new bangs make it into the movie. I will be watching the movie for Derek Luke. Yes, the two first names actor is in the movie in case you've missed the previews. He should play a major role too. Derek has been on and off my radar for a minute but he solidified his place in my top 20 with his role in "Catch a Fire." It was a great movie which did not get as much attention as it should have. And a highlight to the film - Luke got naked (sorry ladies only a back shot), which is not the only reason to rent the film because Luke is fine actor. So yay to Derek for landing the role and hopefully we'll get to see more of him, ;)!!

Why Do We Really Hate Mrs. Raymond?

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Not since Bobby and Whitney or Brit and K-Fed has the public really come against a celebrity marriage with this much passion. When pictures of Usher and Tameka first surfaced, all the news media said that Tameka wasn’t good enough for Usher. Some reports claimed that she was the “other woman” in the whole Usher and Chilli breakup, abandoned her three sons and divorced her husband for Usher, made him fire his mom, and even harassed Mama Raymond. Even Usher’s fan sites have come against the relationship. Many internet websites refer to her as Usher’s husband. Even my girls and I all commented that “damn, I had a chance with Usher, look at her, she’s old, not cute”. Years ago--pre 8701--no one would have cared who Usher ended up with. He was just a little boy who could dance and sing. BUT, something happened between “You make me wanna” and “You remind me”. Usher was working out and obviously eating his Wheaties because he really made me “wanna” with that 6 pack. So, because he so fine and he’s a multi-millionaire, I just assumed that I would have to look like a Victoria’s Secret model for him to wife me. I was wrong. I felt how Chris Rock did when he discovered that JD and Janet were dating. As CR said, “It’s like finding out that yesterday they were giving out Bentleys for a dollar.” Had I known that Usher was into non-celebrity women, I would have tried to get backstage during his last tour. Damn. Missed out on that chance.
However, I have been rethinking my feelings since reading the latest Essence. In the article, the new Mrs. Raymond said that we, as black women, should be ashamed of ourselves for hating on her so much. She believes that if she were Latina or Caucasian, a size 2 and under 30, we would believe that she was beautiful. So, in essence, when we see her, we see ourselves and believe that “brown sistas” aren’t good enough. When I first read this, I was upset. I thought, is Tameka correct? If she were Latina, would I still feel the same way? Am I engaging in self-hate?
Do I really believe that women 35-plus are less deserving of love? I was very concerned. As a lawyer, I am trained to thoroughly analyze and assess a situation. So, I thought that I would analyze why I, like many women, feel that Tameka isn’t up to par. So, here it goes.

First, Tameka is not cute. Sorry, Usher but she’s not. She looked presentable in the Essence magazine (however, the cover was hideous) but who wouldn’t if made up by a glam squad? And, for the record, I am a brown skinned sista so I have no prejudice against darker hues. Her complexion has nothing to do with my assessment. I would feel the same if she were Caucasian or Latina. Second, she’s old. Not, Halle Berry or Demi Moore old. Just regular old. She looks like his mama and not his wife. Chilli was also older and they looked perfect for each other. You know that saying, “Black don’t crack?” Well, there are always exceptions. Third, she’s built like a man. I suppose a nicer description would be “muscular”, but here on “CITC” we keeps it real. Fourth, in all of these pics we see of the newlyweds her kids are interestingly absent. Is she protecting their identity or has she simply chosen them over Usher? While, he has a nice body, he’s not worth it. No man is. Usher, heed this warning :If she’s not a good mama to her first three kids, she’s not going to magically become one to your kid. Is Tameka a Britney in the making? Fifth, she seems like she has an attitude. Never let them see you sweat, sweetie. Look, you’re with a successful, sexy, rich man, smile a little! A true diva would not allow others to bring her down. Sixth, she’s not in tune with her inner fabulosity. I mean, God. Supposedly, she’s a stylist. Now, she’s rich. Step it up a bit on the red carpet. Does she realize how many wanna be future baby mamas are waiting to take her place? And, seventh, last but certainly not least, I’M SIMPLY HATING. I’m younger than she is. I’m cuter than she is. I’m a good mother. I am in tune with my inner fabulosity. I wouldn’t have had him fire his mom. Usher’s mom would not have taken an ex parte out on me. Usher and I would have made a much cuter couple. And, I know that I could have learned those tricks that she’s obviously throwing down in the bedroom ( why else would be so enamored?) BUT, instead he chose her. I was just fine living in my fantasy world believing that Usher would never date someone who wasn’t a celebrity. Now, I realize that I actually had a chance. That’s a hard pill to swallow. So, Tameka, you have to understand how we women feel out here. We’re hurt. And Usher, don’t be so upset boo, we love you and that’s why we’re so angry. One last warning, I would wait to release your next CD until after you and Tameka are separated (which we all know is coming within the next 12 months). Otherwise, you’ll have to risk low record sales due to the public’s disgust over your marriage. I know that’s not fair but that’s life. And like TD always says, “BOO HOO for the millionaire!”
