Joker of the Week Nods

Friday, October 31, 2008

Hola folks,

This week there are a number of potential contenders, and it's been difficult to narrow them down. Happy voting and have a great weekend!

  • Joe The Plumber - This jabroni has a publicist and is working on a country music record deal all because he's become the every man symbol of the Republican Party. He's unlicensed, doesn't own a business, owes back taxes and has the nerve to challenge Obama's plan. But beyond that, this idiot said on Fox News that Obama would bring about the "death of Israel." I really loathe stupid people with a platform.
  • Kadeem Hardison - For appearing as Flavor Flav's sidekick on the sitcom Under One Roof.
  • John McCain/Sarah Palin - This is a preemptive nod--as I am cautiously optimistic that they will LOSE to the Obama/Biden ticket on next Tuesday.
  • George W. Bush - This joker is going out on some of the worst approval ratings ever. His presidency has yielded the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, soaring health care costs, multiple wars, etc. Yet, he still provides gems like this - "This thaw -- took a while to thaw, it's going to take a while to unthaw." -- (speaking on liquidity in the markets, Alexandria, La., Oct. 20, 2008)

Kadeem Hardison: Under One Roof

Thursday, October 30, 2008

While I was working out last night at the gym, I noticed a show on the MyNetwork called Under One Roof. While I had heard about Flavor Flav's new sitcom, I had never actually seen it. The premise of the show is that Flav and his brother are polar opposites. However, Flav took the rap for his brother when he got into a car accident and went to jail. His brother, went on to great success with a mansion in Beverly Hills, a white wife and a successful career. Now, Flav is out of jail and his brother owes him one and they all live...under one roof. Comedy ensues! Yes Flav is a Fresh Prince in the new millennium, without the good looks, charm and comedic timing.

However, that is not the story. The story is--who was guest starring in the role of a fellow ex-con on the loose? Kadeem Hardison. At first, I didn't recognize him. But then I did and I said, "My God. Dwayne Wayne? What the h*ll happened?" I know the credit crisis is hitting everyone, but dang it! A guest appearance on a Flavor Flav sitcom? As a child of the 80s who grew up watching Dwayne navigate black college life on A Different World, I was sad to see him as Flavor Flav's sidekick.

Boutique Mix Charity - Rebuilding Sierra Leone and Understanding Genocide

In Early October, I participated in a panel discussion on Understanding Genocide. The Genocide Conference was hosted by the fabulous, socially conscious and truly wonderful law students at Vermont Law School. We discussed various issues affecting countries that have been affected by Genocide. I spoke about the civil war in Sierra Leone, the rampant use of Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone and other war torn countries and the ways in which we can heal by applying the tools of restorative justice.

As always these events are usually therapeutic for me and allow me to reflect on how lucky I am and pray for those who perished during the civil war in Sierra Leone. It also emphasized the importance of our duty to give back to our communities and our mandate to enrich the lives of the children who have lost everyone and everything.

As we round up 2008, we should continue to grade our efforts--- what have we done? what can we do better? how can we effectuate positive change in Sierra Leone? As promised I will continue to strive to rebuild Sierra Leone one child at a time through this blog and through humanitarian work with different organizations and hopefully, with Vermont Law School. Below are some pictures from the Understanding Genocide Conference.

Hopefully you will join me and Boutique Mix in the 2008 Pledge Campaign to rebuild Sierra Leone and impoverished Africa, one innocent child at a time.
